Indie authors often utilize free book giveaways as a way to build readership and notch up more reviews. Both go a long way to building a book’s word-of-mouth and racking up reviews on Amazon, which, as everyone knows, dominates the world of retail book sales.

A free book deal is a trade-off: the author/publisher makes no money on the deal but, in the long term, the book gains a lot of attention and readers, jumps in Amazon rankings and percolates its way into the site’s recommendation algorithms. So, it’s a great business decision for the author. Only, for whatever reason, I never got around to it. I never came to my senses . . .
